The archeological site of Vergina

The city of Aigai or Vergina as its modern name is, was the first royal capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia and today constitutes one of the most impressive and important archeological sites inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list.

It was summer of 336 b.C when the turn of history changed for ever as king Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great gets assassinated in front of the eyes of thousands of his people- spectators in the theater of Aigai. The young prince Alexander orders a magnificent tomb for his father and then launches the famous conquest of the Persian Empire.

The great tumulus covers and protects for centuries the graves of different members of royal family of the Temedes dynasty along with all the funeral gifts they received in their farewell ceremony, golden wreaths, Macedonian weapons, ivory and other precious objects.

Let's introduce myself

My name is Eugenia and I am a certified, English, Italian, Spanish and Greek speaking tour guide. Being born and growing up in a place where myths and history blended across centuries, I developed a keen interest in culture and archaeology and a great curiosity about foreign cultures and languages. I studied Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Athens, majoring in Italian and Spanish literature and continued my education at the National School of Tour Guides, in Thessaloniki. Three years of intense classes and numerous tour-guides in Greece credited me with many fulfilling experiences.
I worked as a tour-leader in Italy, Check Republic, Serbia, Germany and Turkey. And in all these travels, I felt that getting to know a place was a lot more than sightseeing and museum visits. It was about the people and every day life, gastronomy and habits and all these particularities that make one country different from another. In Greece I have worked in various places such as Athens, Olympia, Mykonos, Thessaloniki, Meteora and Vergina.
For the last years, I have been working and living in Santorini. When I first step my foot on this island, I immediately had a feeling of belonging. Santorini is a place combining simplicity with greatness: the true Hellenic essence! Its rich historical and cultural background, the wild volcanic landscape, the white houses contrasting with the Aegean blue, the Cycladic light, the magical sunset in Oia, its aromatic wines and delicacies of its land, the vivid traditions and hospitality of its inhabitants make Santorini my paradise on earth… which I invite you to come and experience together with the Greek spirit and the warmth of the locals and I am sure you would be thrilled as much as I was…
